Rameshwaram

The disciplined Vanaras, a hundred thousand of them, stood there waiting for orders. They had a purpose. An exiled king had requested their help rescuing his beloved wife who was abducted by a mighty demon. The place was sanctified with the Lord's presence. The discipline and cleanliness of the Vanaras heightened that sanctity to the utmost. The accumulated stones and clay in heaps on the shore reminded them of the daunting task, a task unheard of till then and would be time immemorial, a task that needed the wildest imaginations of the scientific among them, Nala and Nila, the task of breaching the sea with a bridge. They had no tools with them other than determination and bhakthi, which they had in abundance. The bridge built, rescue done and the place was since consecrated.

The journey we took on 14th Feb to Rameshwaram was monotonous until we reached Pamban bridge. The sight from that bridge changed everything to vibrant. A beautiful island surrounded with crystalline turquoise blue sea, a rare scene we had seen only in movies. This is one of the most beautiful scenic places in India, no doubt!

After checked into Tamil Nadu hotel, we visited the nearby ferry for a short sight seeing trip in the sea. We are from a place where there are many ferries around, so for us this trip in the sea was nothing to be excited about. However the crowd seemed enjoying it. We met a couple, Selvan and Lakshmi, in the boat who had come for their children's Mundan ceremony. We had no difficulty mingling with these cordial people despite the language barrier.

The jetty itself was quite scenic. Under the wooden wharf in the pristine water we saw fishes swimming.

The climate was hot but the breeze from the sea made it tolerable.

On the beach, there were idols scattered, most of them broken and seemed abandoned.

A few pilgrims were busy collecting shells.

Beauty has its burden, for the shore was an open air toilet too. One had to be careful while strolling on the beach.

We proceeded to the Ramanatha temple premises. The scene there was not encouraging. The premises were filthy and congested. Beggars, vendors and religious businesses were flourishing.

Next day,  we woke up early to watch sunrise in the sea. On the beach road, we saw a man stopping his bicycle. A large number of crows were there. In Mumbai, people feed birds in many places and we thought this man was about to feed the crows. We were wrong indeed. He shooed them away and proceeded to the beach, lifted his dhoti and went about his morning business.

O the new age Vanaras! What have you done to this place! Where is the discipline, planning, purpose, cleanliness, respect, loyalty and pride? A beautiful land desecrated, a generation in turmoil, a revenge and redemption undone!
***

Rameshwaram Tamil Nadu Hotel's restaurant had these boards prominently displayed. Self-righteousness?

Next, we visited Dhanushkodi beach. Wow! What a scenic place!

On the beach, there were tea shops with thatched roof.

Despite tourism nuisances, the villagers were happy to answer our queries. There were some construction works too in progress.

We helped some fisher folks to fetch their canoe to the beach.

On the Dhanushkodi stretch, we saw migrating Flamingos and other birds.

These bird photographers were so engrossed in their work that they did not notice our presence.

Then we decided to start our return journey to Trivandrum as it would be an eight hours drive. On the way back, below Pamban bridge, we saw these villagers on the sea shore.

We took the Thiruchenthur-Kanyakumari route for our  return journey. On the way we saw these beautiful birds having fun in a field near Thiruchanthur.

We reached Trivandrum at around 10 in the night.

The tree that wasn't there

This Sunday there were two kids digging a pit on the beach.

"What is this hole for?", I asked them out of curiosity.

The younger one showing a plastic bag filled with shells and sand replied "we fill the hole with this and then plant a tree in it. Tomorrow the sapling will grow into a full tree. We can come and sleep under it."

I looked around and found no sapling. "Where is the tree?", I asked.

"We will find one and bring it"

"Why the shells?"

"Silly, doesn't the tree need to eat something to grow?"

Digging holes. Reserving food. If only they could find the sapling!

00:30 AM Cherthala Bus stand

My friend Mahesh, his shadow and mine. It was midnight when we were waiting for a bus to Trivandrum at Cherthala bus station on Saturday. I love my Fuji X100S for giving this picture in such dim surroundings without flash.

Scientists

It is that stretch of time when 'scientists' -
explore 'history' for reason
try some for treason
discover scripted glories and revel.

It is time -
to find recluse.
to search for Atlantis.
to have a private laugh.
to hibernate.

Sleep, there is time aplenty
It's a long stretch.

Ramakkalmedu

On 24th, we checked out early morning from Tamilnadu Hotel, Kodaikanal and hit the road to Ramakkalmedu, Kerala. We had spent 4 days in the hotel. The descent was quite smooth except that it was chilling cold on the winding mountain road. When we reached the plain the climate was very pleasant.

The route suggested by Google map via Bodinayakanur proved to be a longer one compared to the short Theni-Kambam highway route that we would have taken. It took about 60 kilometers more. But the drive was quite enjoyable watching the green villages and installations of windmills along the way. We crossed the state border on the Cumbummettu road and reached Ramakkalmedu at around 2 PM. There was this clean ancient looking village hotel 'Shaseendran' in Balan Pilla City (a township along the way) where we had rice meal with thoran, sambar, pulissery, fish curry and fish fry. Rs.80/- for two! The food was genuine (I would say innocent) and delicious.

Next, we headed to Ramakkalmedu. There was an entry fee of Rs.5 per person. Ramakkalmedu is a hillstation on the border of Tamilnadu and Kerala from where one can view the entire Kambam Theni stretch. It is a well maintained picturesque location. More details on Ramakkalmedu is here.

The Kuravan and Kurathy statue was huge and awe-inspiring. The air was so fresh and clean. We took some pictures of the statue and hill views.

There was this knowledgeable guy with a telescope doing good business renting it. He talked about the history and importance of the place to his customers with authority. He went on explaining the inter-state conflicts regarding the Mullaperiyar dam and the erstwhile British presence in the place. The telescope provided a view of the entire region spanning far away places in Theni-Cumbum belt.

I have this gut feeling that eventually the magic of this place will fade away just as in the case of other tourist locations. We saw horse riding and other tourism businesses flourishing. Plastic and other entertainments related pollutants are creeping in.

From the hill we could see silhouettes of Kattadippadam windmills far away. Next day we would visit that place.

We wanted a place to stay overnight. My friend Pradyumnan had given me the contact details of a local. We contacted him. We were not interested in resorts or hotels as they were prohibitively expensive that day. We told this guy that we were interested in a clean room with fresh linens and a clean bathroom. It did not matter where. He took us to his sister's place where an outhouse was built with just one room with an attached bathroom. The room was on the slope of a small hill. It was newly built and the interiors were fresh. There was a garden around the house with lots of flowers.

His sister was the gardener. We liked the place immediately. They were very cordial people and the stay was very good. We ordered dinner from the same people who were also conducting the canteen on the hilltop.

After sunset we spent a few more hours on the hilltop. People had left and an eerie silence fell over the place, notwithstanding there was nothing to worry about.

At night, our house owner brought tapioca and chicken curry sufficient for at least 4 people. We returned half the food as we did not want to waste it. The food was excellent! Typical eastern Kerala cuisine.

The night was peaceful. There was no fan in the room and the pleasant climate did not warrant one. We slept uninterrupted.

Next day was Christmas. In the morning, we decided to visit a church and found one at Thookkupalam. St. Antony's church. The Mass and congregation were of typical Syro-Malabar rite. The back benchers always sat with their bum facing the altar, most of them sleeping.

After the Mass, there were cake sale and Christmas lottery. In Mumbai, I remembered, after the Christmas Mass in our San Jose Church at Wagle Estate, local politicians Eknath Shinde and Manoj Shinde used to gift us cakes of various flavors.

We left the church and went to visit Kattadippadam, a hilly place where lots of windmills were installed. Most shops were closed as it was Christmas day. We had our breakfast from a hotel at Thookupalam. Idiappam and egg curry, which was good.

At Kattadippadam, the windmills were stationary as there was no wind. This was strange as Ramakkalmedu is known to be one of Asia's largest wind blowing area throughout the year irrespective of the season and time. Near Kattadippadam, there was a long stretch of grassland on a small hill, where we saw no inhabitants.

A dog appeared from nowhere and he was determined to bite us, except that we literally stood our ground and that discouraged him.

Then we saw a local coming carrying a kid on his shoulder. We followed him to find out where he is heading, which seemed made him nervous. He proceeded to the valley and we abandoned the chase.

We left Ramakkalmedu for Cherthala at around 11 AM. From Kattappana BEVCO, we bought red and white wine of Sula brand, but later we found they had turned vinegar as BEVCO did not store them properly.

The scenery on the way to Cherthala, our hometown, through Idukki dam site and high range was splendid. Hairpin bends, dams and exquisite nature scenes made the journey a pleasure.

Art and God - a wayside scene on Bordi/Asavali road

Believers have always found ways to recognize the presence of God in everything they see. But artists make that presence visible to even the commonest of common men. This Sacred fig with a natural imprint of Lord Ganapati stands in a picturesque locality on the way from Bordi to Asavali dam, surrounded by Bajra fields and a line of enchanting Banyan trees. So beautiful and revering.

Vadakkumkara Pooram

This is the month March and it is time for temple festivals at Cherthala! The Vadakkumkara pooram is just over. A lot of celebrations and rejoicing everywhere. Festivities on the street. Decorated elephants, processions and traditional rites. I love the fireworks at Vadakkumkara temple. Alas! This year even though I was at Pallippuram I missed it. Elephants! The poor creatures! I love elephants and sympathise with them. What else could I do? An elephant procession is in progress at Vadakkumkara. Here are some pictures.
